The National Trauma Institute (NTI) recently elected five new members to its Board of Directors, including Priority Ambulance Director of New Business Integration Dennis Rowe who will serve as the liaison member from the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT). NTI is a national nonprofit organization that advocates for increased federal funding for trauma research and research infrastructure to reduce death and disability.
Rowe currently serves as president of NAEMT. He began involvement with NAEMT in 1976 rising soon to board and leadership positions. NAEMT is the recognized leader in advancing the profession of emergency and mobile health care.
As a paramedic, Rowe has served in rural, urban, hospital, local government and state EMS systems. He was the part of the startup team for UT LIFESTAR Aeromedical Program and trauma coordinator for the Level One Trauma Center at the University of Tennessee Medical Center-Knoxville. His interests include military trauma care delivery systems, rural trauma care and injury research. He is a prolific national and international presenter and has participated in multiple clinical trials and publications.
“I look forward to working with the other members of the NTI Board in advancing its important mission,” said Rowe. “The opportunity to formally advance prehospital trauma care into the continuum of patient care science is a great honor.”
Rowe joined the 24-member board at a busy time. NTI has recently been awarded funding for the development of the National Trauma Research Repository (NTRR) and studies of pre-hospital deaths and deep vein thrombosis, among other ongoing projects.
“During my time at UT Medical Center, I had the opportunity to work with leaders in the field on d-dimer, the clotting cascade and early intervention to prevent DVTs,” said Rowe. “I appreciate the opportunity to reengage in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) research and intervention.”
“We’re very pleased to have representation from NAEMT on the Board for the first time,” said NTI Chairman Dr. Gregory J. (“Jerry”) Jurkovich. “As we are building a national research agenda that includes topics along the full spectrum of trauma care, Mr. Rowe’s experience administering to patients in the pre-hospital environment will be invaluable.”
NTI works in coalition with like-minded organizations to achieve rapid advances in traumatic injury treatment that can save lives. The organization’s leaders believe that a robust research agenda and infrastructure are long over-due, pointing to a 50-year history of federally acknowledged research funding inadequacies.
